Dave Beer

A man like Dave Beer really needs no introduction, but for those who don't know he's head honcho of  Back to Basics club and label. He was involved in the house scene from the start and always had a passion for all manor of music and art. For many years he was tour manager for Indie acts such as Sisters of Mercy, That Petrol Emotion and Pop Will Eat Itself, as well as touring with bands like The Ramones and Motorhead.

With a Rock 'n Roll ethos and having experienced the birth of Acid House, in 1988, he had been bitten by the bug which lead him to the heart of the Hacienda and the illegal warehouse raves of the time. Inspired by the ground breaking scene Dave started throwing parties of his own, everywhere from disused libraries to old mills in the middle of the countryside. As the rave scene exploded the parties became too popular for their own good and created much police attention, which was provoked by the imagery and advertising that promoted these now legendary events. In 1991 the Criminal Justice Bill loomed and Back to Basics was formed as a kickback to the whistle blowing, white glove wearing and dummy-sucking scene at the time. Starting Back to Basics with his best friend Ali Cooke and DJ’s such as Ralph Lawson and James Holroyd the club soon became a place to be for like-minded friends and music lovers who were tired of others events.

Back to Basics has just celebrated its 18th Birthday and is the longest standing night of its kind in the world. As well as being the owner and mastermind of the legendary club, Dave regularly DJ’s at the best spots throughout the world. His DJing reflects an open-minded music policy and his record collection maintains the true identity of a four-to-the-floor house man, whilst still demonstrating a wide range of influences from funk to punk, electro and beyond.

As well as having played alongside all the premier league stars, Dave is always invited to play at the likes of Glastonbury, Bestival, We Love in Ibiza and recently opening up for Whitney Houston in front of 40,000 people. Over the years Dave has been a TV presenter, writer, producer and remixed the likes of David Bowie and Chrissey Hind and currently is rocking the spot every time he steps up to DJ. Dave is also involved in a highly anticipated collaboration with DJ, producer, Bulletdodge Records boss and Back to Basics Recordings manager Gareth Whitehead. The production duo are coming together as The Blessed, a project that promises to be an exciting venture that will incorporate melodic house and driving, funky grooves and a live show not to be reckoned with.

With Back to Basics still going strong there’s no sign of Dave Beer letting up, as his club, DJ skills, music production and all round presence continue to maintain his legendary status and inspire everyone who comes into contact with him.
